First sem was finally over!

Thank God!

I felt that I was pursuing LAW.. haha anyway...

I can't describe the feeling of how tired i am, how STRESSED i was... in that really eye bulging sem!... Maybe you can imagine the most tiresome thing that you did, multiply it to infinity... that's how tiresome it was... If there's such a word as Academic shock.. then that's what it should rightfully call ... haha... I learned to read books...books books and handouts...  And i learned that studying should now be a hobby... a very boring and deteriorating hobby!

Thanks to my new found friends... who still made it memorable... though sometimes we felt depress about our grades... OA noh... Actually, we can't help it! It was like doing your best but still you fail... hahai... that's life... On the lighter side... There's fruit in every hardship and our tree already bears its fruit, (Joke! sa Oct. 23 pa malalaman) haha... But i have a very positive hunch! "1a3 will still be 1a3. papasa kami lahat haha"

that's all... I'm now out of mood... I hope and pray that next sem will be our turn to shine... haha though we know that it' will now be the start of our first sorrowful mystery, our agony in the garden.. wooot! Nothing more serious... Be Positive!  And happy Vacation to all... vacationee (is there's such thing?) haha

BUTTERFLY

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon.

The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time.

Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.

What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were God's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If God allowed us to go through our lives without any obstacles, it would cripple us.

We would not be as strong as what we could have been. We could never fly!

I asked for Strength.........
And God gave me Difficulties to make me strong.

I asked for Wisdom.........
And God gave me Problems to solve.

I asked for Prosperity.........
And God gave me Brain and Brawn to work.

I asked for Courage.........
And God gave me Danger to overcome.

I asked for Love.........
And God gave me Troubled people to help.

I asked for Favors.........
And God gave me Opportunities.

I received nothing I wanted ........
I received everything I needed!

It's a gloomy wednesday when our grammar mentor asked us to make a journal visualizing ourselves few years from now (I chose 25 years ahead, coz i know that it's more possible to reach my goals in that spand of time than 5-10 yrs.. you'll now better why 5 or 10 yrs. was not enough when you continue reading this blog.)

" The secret to productive goal setting is in establishing clearly defined goals, writing them down and then focusing on them several times a day with words, pictures and emotions as if we've already achieved them." -Denis Waitley

This journal activity was one of my favorite. Maybe because i just love to write about the things that i want to achieve after years of hardworking spend in my eduacation, and hoping that destiny won't let me down in achieving my goals. Dreaming became a habit for me, and as i grow older my dreams got older as well, they soar as high as the human mind can think (i mean they just became unreachable for me) okay, for you to understand me better, i can site some exmples of my dreams...

* i dream of becoming a superstar... (anyone can laugh... haha gee! that's really horrible... i know) well, but not like those superstar seen on TV but rather superstar on my own career. i want to be a professional, having my own license as a Certifies Public Accountant, a CPA... and i really want to be a superstar in this field. working in a bank as an executive, and plans to put up an accounting firm. (ok, it's not horrible anyway).

* i dream of having my own business (aside from my accounting form)... since i was a child, i always do love the ambiance of Beaches, I love swimming too... so maybe you already have a clue on my first dream business. A resort. well, with a nature motif. gee! gee! gee! i Love it.. next, i want to put up a restaurant (with my brother as the chief cook... that's if i can convinced him to take up HRM or Culinary arts)  i love eating! i Love gerry's concept... i mean Gerry's grill concept of having a native but classy restaurant with first-class and mouth-watering pinoy dishes and delicacies. in this concept i will not just earn profit but help in promoting our country's dishes as well.

*i want to built a townhouse or multi-door apartments for my parents to manage, so that they can still have passive income even if they don't have stable jobs anymore.

* ok, this is  a very silly dream. and my last "dream-sharing" at the same time. 25 years from now, surely or if not, then maybe... i have already a family of my own. happily living in a modern house (designed by my sister, who is in that time, a well-known architect) with a 2-floor parking lot for our HUNDREDS OF LUXERY CARS...at an executive village somewhere in alabang (haha) with a faithful, god fearing, Handsome (plsssss God... haha) Husband, also a professional with a stable work, and with our 2 kids (only two... ) a girl and a boy... studying in a well-known exclusive schools.

Do I become too ambitious?

ok so much of those silly big dreams of mine. well, what i realized about this writting activity was that: Dreaming isn't bad at all, actually, it is our motivator in reaching our goals... Maybe mine was very unrealistic if you talk about my own capabilities... but! there's no such thing as BIG DREAMS or IMPOSSIBLE DREAMS if you really work hard to earn it... if you think you can't then surely, you can't! But if you think positive, work hard (REALLY HARD! FOLKS!) and KEEP YOUR FAITH IN HIM... then, what's impossible?

"Why should you be content with so little? Why shouldn't you reach out for something big?"  - CHARLES L. ALLEN

- so much love... AIKA

Politics from my teenage eyes

By Angelica S. Velez

For about two months now, political ads have been continuously aired and announced in televisions and radios, posters are everywhere from the different designated poster areas to tall posts to huge and colorful billboards, and a long line of motorcade conducted in every town. These campaign ads just get under my skin especially the commercials of the candidates for the upcoming senatorial election. I’m irritated by the candidates’ fake smiles, trying to convince the voters to write their name in the ballots. I can’t help but be annoyed by their passé platforms and speeches in their commercials that becomes a tradition every campaign period since I was a child: “to serve and to help people, especially the poor ones” does it still attract the starving Filipino voters?

As a teenager I was already traveling from a place to another, its either going for an out of town trip or just going to the mall with friends and family but as we travel it was always been an eye-sore for me to see unlawful tenants or what we called squatters in our own land. What did those politicians do with their promises? How about the money that supposed to be for the benefits of the people?

In a recent survey conducted by the Hongkong- based Political and Economic Risk Consultancy (PERC) Philippines is topping the list of the most corrupt countries in Asia. No doubt! Because as I can see our country is rich in natural resources and hardworking people but because of these Politicians, who squander all our moneys and don’t have sympathy for our country then they made our country what it is today.

But in the first place whose fault is this? Remember that politicians do sit in a position because of your vote! So the voters are the key instrument in putting this candidate in the position where he or she is sitting right now. Legal voters should be 18 years old and above, that means they are already capable in choosing the right candidates which they think deserves to be trusted. But some of these voters don’t even bother to scan the backgrounds of these candidates. They don’t even realize that their vote defines the future of this country.

But how does one pick up the most deserving leader from a long list of candidates? Okay, base on my wide imagination and base on what I‘ve read  I’d come up with these characteristics that a leader should look like: first, a leader should have the brains of Albert Einstein, so he’d come up with one million and one brilliant ways on how to solve our country’s growing problems. Keen eyes of detective Conan, so that he could easily detect the anomalies happening in congress especially about the issue of corruption, nose of the sniffing dogs so that he could automatically seek for opportunities that will help our country‘s economy, Opra’s mouth, will allow words of wisdom and inspiration to echo through the land with tasteful humor and quick wit, Mother Theresa’s caring hands, so that he could always lend a hand to those people in need and touch the lives of his countrymen. Ears of a super hero, so he can automatically here the mourning of the people who needs his help, Superman’s big, big hulking body because it will allow him to endure the painstaking process of reviving an ill-fated nation. Lastly I will give him a heart of a child, so innocent and pure, full of love and hope a heart filled with dreams and the will to make them come true, a heart of a good follower who will eventually becomes a great leader.. Well can you now imagine this perfect politician? Let’s just call him Super P!

Politicians should not totally look like Super P, but at least should posses some of his characteristics especially his Heart, because the heart defines the whole characteristic of a person, and of a good leader.

Politicians can be dishonest on what they say, they may claim that they are the perfect senator or mayor, some may use different strategies to get your vote, they may even use the scriptures to attract voters and to show that they are good. But remember that Jesus himself warned us about the devil quoting scripture. So be wise and think trice in every vote that you write, because your vote defines our country’s future.

Three years from now I will already be joining the voters group, and as this day comes I will be a keen investigator in choosing the candidates that will hold my future. I will make sure that they cannot fool me with their words but with their work

A Hair-Raising High School Musical

TFK chats with the cast of the new movie, Hairspray

By Vickie An

Meet Tracy Turnblad. She's the curvy teenage heroine in the movie musical remake of Hairspray, set in Baltimore, Maryland, in the early 1960s. Tracy, played by newcomer Nikki Blonsky, has big hair, a big heart and even bigger dreams. All she wants is a spot on The Corny Collins Show, a local television dance program. But her round figure has always made her an outsider. It's something that her overprotective, plus-sized mother points out to her every day.

This doesn't stop Tracy, however. Her dance skills not only land her on Corny's show, they also win the attention of the show's dreamiest heartthrob, Link Larkin (High School Musical's Zac Efron). Will the plucky teen be able to convince her mom and the rest of Baltimore to find beauty beyond physical appearances? With a little bit of help from best friend Penny (Amanda Bynes) and new pal Seaweed (Elijah Kelley), anything's possible!

Hairspray, which opens on July 20, is based on a 1988 film and a Tony Award-winning Broadway show. TFK spoke with Nikki, Zac, Amanda and Elijah about what it was like being transported back in time.

TFK:

Nikki, what was it like playing Tracy?

Nikki:

Well, I was a 17-year-old girl with a big dream, and that's exactly who Tracy is. She loves her body, and she loves her life. She just loves love, you know? She doesn't see any reason to hate anything. That's pretty much how I am. I was told I was beautiful every day by my parents. At the end of the day, the only thing that really matters is that I make my parents proud.

TFK:

Can you all talk about your own characters and their relationships with Tracy?

Zac:

It's really great (playing Link in) the movie because in real life, I've always tended to be that guy who goes for the Tracys. I'm really proud to play a character that shows it's not always about being that tall, perfect blonde girl. It's about character and about having fun, and it's about hobbies and about your personality. I'm very proud to fall in love with Tracy.

Amanda:

I feel I lucked out because my character, Penny, doesn't see weight or color. It's good for anyone who sees this movie, young or old, to see that my character is accepting.

Nikki:

There are characters in this movie for everybody. It reaches every person.

TFK:

And Elijah, your character Seaweed accepts Tracy because...

Elijah:

Because she's cool! Where I come from, in and out of the movie, you don't (hang out) with people because of their popularity. Tracy's just a cool girl that can dance, you know?

TFK:

Do you feel there's pressure in Hollywood to be a certain way?

Nikki:

There's a big stereotype in Hollywood to look a certain way and to be a certain way. What I'm so excited about is hopefully knocking that stereotype out of the park and showing kids out there that difference is okay, that uniqueness is beautiful. Be who you are and be proud of it, and follow your dreams.

TFK:

Besides the issue of weight, the film deals with segregation during the 1960s as well.

Elijah:

I'm from a small town in Georgia and when my parents were growing up... my mom experienced some of that stuff (discrimination) and she conveyed those messages to me, as did my grandparents and great uncles and older cousins. (It was great) to be able to show in this movie that judging people for how they look or by their skin tone is ridiculous.

TFK:

What was it like working with John Travolta and Christopher Walken, who play Tracy's mom and dad?

Nikki:

They are two legendary actors of our time. They're icons in their own right. To get to know John and Chris and what incredible people they are, and to have them play such intimate roles as my parents... Childhood is a very important time for a kid. Parents make up a lot of who their children are. So, in this case, (John and Chris) were two key factors in finding out who Tracy really was.

TFK:

How was it learning all of those 1960s dance moves?

Zac:

None of us were really dancers. We had done musical theater. That's probably the only training we had.

Elijah:

We had so many rehearsals before we even saw a camera. We were there every day for eight hours a day just pounding these routines and these songs into our heads. It was like a summer camp.

TFK:

They made dolls of your characters! What do you all think of your Hairspray dolls?

Nikki:

At the premiere, one of the ladies who made the dolls was there, and she had the singing version of my doll. She said, "Press your stomach!" And I pressed my stomach, and (the song) "Welcome to the 60s" came out!

Zac:

It's weird that the stomach activates it.

Elijah:

(Having your own doll) makes Christmas shopping a little bit easier. (Laughs) Seaweed for everyone!

TFK:

What was your favorite toy growing up?

Nikki:

I loved Polly Pocket... And you're laughing at me.

Zac:

(Laughs) No, it's funny... I had the equivalent of Polly Pocket, except they were Ninja Turtles in a Polly Pocket version. I also like Transformers.

Amanda:

I had an Easy-Bake oven. And I did love Barbies. When I was 12, I all of a sudden got into them again. I was like, "Mom, I'm into Barbies again!"

TFK:

Nikki, you got to wear a lot of great outfits for the movie. Which was your favorite?

Nikki:

I'm going to have to say my pink sequin dress.

Zac:

I like the checkered dress though!

Nikki:

I know, I love that one too, but there's something about wearing a matching dress with John Travolta. It took the experience to a whole other level! (Laughs)

TFK:

Zac, you've done quite a few musicals. Do you want to do anything more dramatic?

Zac:

I'd love to, but I'll keep doing musicals. I'm so blessed to be here. Really, I'd like to go any direction. There are all different levels of being creative, and you have to explore all the genres to really see everything. So I'd like to try it all.

TFK:

What would you tell kids who want to pursue acting?

Zac:

Go audition for the next play in your town. It doesn't have to be at school. There are theater houses everywhere. You owe it to yourself to try. If you fall in love with it, and you enjoy performing and learning by being part of a play, then you should definitely pursue acting.

Amanda:

I would say graduate from high school or college before you do anything, just so you can be a stable person before you come into this. Also, take classes and do plays. Before I did anything, I did plays in my community theater. That's what really trained me.

Blackbeard's Seafood Island

The Golden Age of Piracy influences one of the most packed restaurants in Market Market – Blackbeard’s Seafood Island. Named after Blackbeard or Edward Teach, the most notorious pirate in the history of seafaring, was believed to be, in Blackbeard Seafood Island history, that he got tired of being a pirate and became a chef till the end of his days. Interesting fiction, that is. Brought to life by one of the restaurant pirates of Manila, Blackbeard’s Seafood Island continues to make a name for itself amongst its numerous competitors.

Imagine servers in pirate costumes, food skewered in a sword and a feast for at least 4. The restaurant is swarming with families on weekends and regular shoppers and call center agents on weekdays. The first to use the pirate concept, the food is as notorious (in a good way) as the name it carries.

Sophisticated but casual. This is how I can best describe Blackbeard’s. The cuisine is Filipino and Asian, but leaning more to Filipino. The servings are at par with your money and the service is notable, especially when it’s the first time you see jolly pirates – total opposite of what was dictated in history.

Boodle Feasts are often suggested to groups of clients with just the right amount of budget can go for a complete set meal that will leave you satisfied in the end. Or, it can serve two if you and your partner can wipe everything out: Kevin’s Boodle (Php 475 / 695)is a huge bamboo platter filled with kalkag (shrimp) and kasag (crab) rice, ensaladang mangga, vegetable kare-kare, inasal na manok, noodles pancit espesyal and tilapia. If you want something street-like or as they say, kanto-inspired, they also offer Calle Pirata (Php 475 / 695) comprised of pork barbeque, tenga ng baboy, adidas, kwek-kwek, balut ala pobre, chicken inasal, lumpiang togue and garlic rice.

The most interesting selection for me is the Espada Combination. Meat, fish and the like are skewered in swords and served with grilled corn, eggplant, onion, tomoatoes, garlic rice and a slice of tropical fruit. You can go for All Meat (Php 395) which is liempo and chicken inasal, or Seafood (Php 545) – squid, tilapia, prawns or Surf and Turf (425) – liempo, prawns, and tilapia.

You may find it weird but what caught my attention was the Balut sa Aligue ala Pobre (Php 169). I loved how the crab fat sauce complemented the balut and how the toasted garlic put the spice into it. I could have this and rice and I’m good.

The usual Filipino treats like sisig, bulalo, sinigang, kare-kare, etc. are also in the menu for those who are craving for it or are less adventurous to eat from a sword. Its branches are in Market Market and Eastwood, both of which are also venues for call centers. They serve breakfast and have implemented a Breakfast Beer Promo for the call center people who don’t get to party because they have to work at night.

Overall, the dining experience at Blackbeard’s satisfied me and my guests. It was a special Filipino dining experience and we are sure to go back for more interesting tries.

I’m a senior! I know. It’s weird. It connotes ending and beginnings of many sorts. And I can’t help but be bothered by pressures and difficulties that we have to go through before getting our diplomas. I remember my life as a kid, no pressures, no stress, no strict teachers and most of all no sleeping late at night, and because of that I wish that I can bring back time but as reality says it’s impossible!

Way back when I was still a kid, we had an old green van that was actually ready to be disposed, but before it happened my friends, my siblings and I decided to convert it as our bahay-bahayan, we clean it up, everyday! We arrange the chairs put lots of decorations and voila! Our new play house! That van served as our private play house and we even made a password that only those who knew it can go inside. It was really fun having a shelter especially when it was raining, and when you need a hiding place to escape your angry mom. But everything always has an ending. One morning our parents told us that the green van should be transported to the province because we will have a new van and we need to have enough parking space so we have to let go of it. Off course, we didn’t agree but sometimes what we want don’t usually happen. The next morning our play house was gone, no traces of it nor shadows, it was totally gone. I didn’t even have the chance to take my last glimpse to my second home before it was taken. But in my realization, our parent’s were right. If we want to have a new van we have to let go of the old one though the new van cannot be converted into a play house anymore. And we know that even though we lost our van the memories that we have with it, will always be treasured.

We are all prisoners of our past. We always compare our selves way back many years ago to our present selves. We cannot accept the fact that we are undergoing a transformation and thus we don’t need to bring our old childish ways with us. Being a senior is a big challenge to change ourselves to a mature person and prepare ourselves to the trials and difficulties. We have to face all of these with our present selves and not with our old selves. Things will always change. You cannot stop nor do anything but to go with its flow. We just have to accept the changes. We can be terrified with the pressures and difficulties that we have to conquer before we can say that we won the battle but let us just think that in every difficulty that we will do is a great step in molding our future. It is our last year, and definitely we cannot go back time so let us just cherish every moment that we painstakingly mold, and face every challenge as if it is our last. And remember that in order to complete your transformation into a mature person let go of the past and face your present with values and faith, and do what you should do. though you will really need to sleep late at night.
